NFL Week 3
So the NFL is beginning to hit it's stride as the season is ready to finish week 3 with a Monday Night Football showdown between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks. However, I want to look at yesturdays surprises. Of course I have to mention the Belichick incceident. Although I do not agree with any sort of harassing the officials have recieved this season. I do not think Belichick was trying to harass or attack the ref, he simply wanted to talk about that field goal. However the ref blew him off thinking he was going to be just like the rest of the coaches that wanted to argue. However, I think it's time to weight in on the issue of the "replacement officials" as everyone calls them. These men are doing the best they can with the situation they have been given. They are not used to calling games at the NFL's speed, and they are not used to the NFL's style of rules and play. But, with that said, players and coaches have crossed the line when handling the new officials. Commissioner Goodell needs to start penalizing the coaches and players that harass the officials and needs to offer trainning to the new officials so they can learn how to make the right call during the week while they are not surronded by screaming fans and teams. The labor issues with the Officials Union will not go away soon, so these officials will still be here for the near future and could possibly become a permant fixture. As these refs gain experience in the NFL they will become better at making calls and will eventually make the old officials useless. However, that will only happen if the NFL defends them and gives them every opportunity to get the calls right. But for now we will get to watch the circus as it plays out before us every Sunday.
